POINT FERMIN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Bonnie Taft named principal at campus

Point Fermin Elementary School gets its third principal in three school years Tuesday as Bonnie Taft takes over at one of San Pedro's oldest public campuses.

The Los Angeles Unified School District named Taft as principal of the school in late August, after she interviewed with a committee of parents, teachers and administrators.

Taft was picked from a list of candidates. To gain a principal job in LAUSD, candidates must pass written tests and interviews to be placed on a waiting list for openings.

Taft replaces Geraldine "Gerrie" Cole, who left the school in June. The district granted Cole's request for a transfer to Gulf Avenue Elementary School in Wilmington. The Rolling Hills Estates resident had been an assistant principal at Crestwood Street Elementary School.

MARY STAR OF THE SEA HIGH SCHOOL

Campus grad places in photo contest

A graduate of Mary Star of the Sea High School has placed third in an annual art contest sponsored by Rep. Jane Harman (D-El Segundo).

Alex Tarazon placed third with his photo "Face of Democracy" in the photography category. The prize carried a cash scholarship of $150 and gift certificates to local businesses. Eight other students, most of whom attend South Bay schools, won the other prizes in the three categories of photography, drawing and painting.
