CINCINNATI, Sept. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Today KnowledgeWorks Foundation released on-the-ground stories documenting the first year of The Ohio High School Transformation Initiative (OHSTI), one of the most aggressive high school reform efforts ever attempted in the nation. Supported by KnowledgeWorks Foundation, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Ohio and US Departments of Education, and other partners, OHSTI is helping approximately 25, 000 underserved urban students across Ohio.
"These stories give us hope. They are the first chapter in a revolutionary tale of high school transformation," says Chad P. Wick, president and CEO of KnowledgeWorks Foundation. "They illustrate both the trials and accomplishments of teachers, students, and community members who become empowered to lead their high schools and transform a decades-old culture."
Documented by independent freelance writers, the authentic, behind-the- scenes stories in Every Student Deserves a Legacy: A Year of Transformation in the Lives of Ohio's Urban High School Students tell a tale of struggle and success among the small groups of students, teachers, community members, and leaders involved in OHSTI.
This initiative has already converted 18 of Ohio's large, struggling urban high school campuses into 58 smaller high schools where underserved students receive more personal attention than they do in traditionally large, impersonal urban high schools. From small school leaders struggling to create a warm, friendly culture to underserved students who succeed in delivering a presentation at a national conference on education reform, these stories document both the hope and conflict of large-scale transformation.
The publication also highlights two Early College high schools, schools that give urban students the opportunity to graduate with associate's degrees or up to 60 hours of college credit, along with their high school diplomas. The goal of both of these initiatives is to raise the academic expectations and graduation rate among underserved urban high school students across Ohio.
