Tracy, Delta College Officials Talking Satellite Campus

September 8, 2005

Sep. 8–TRACY — San Joaquin Delta College and Tracy officials announced Wednesday afternoon they are in negotiations to build a satellite campus on the northeast corner of 11th Street and Chrisman Road.

If built, the facility would take the place of a similar campus originally proposed in Mountain House after the passage of Measure L in March 2004.

The campus is expected to open for the fall term of 2007.

“It’s not a done deal, but we are seriously dating,” Tracy City Manager Dan Hobbs said. “Delta College can come here a lot more cheaply than it would cost them to go to Mountain House, and we would welcome them with open arms.”

Tracy Mayor Dan Bilbrey said building a new campus for Delta College could be a catalyst for development of Tracy’s east side.

“Expanding the opportunities for higher education within the region is critical to the economic health and future of our growing population,” Bilbrey said.

Delta College President Raul Rodriguez said a campus in the southern section of San Joaquin County will provide easier access for students.

“Equally important is forging partnerships” with communities such as Tracy, Rodriguez said.
