Pupils in Wales are improving year on year when it comes to getting results in National Curriculum assessments, provisional statistics showed yesterday.
Welsh pupils aged seven, 11 and 14 were last night praised for their results in Key Stage assessments.
The provisional statistics released show stability in most areas, with improvements in other including:
The percentage of seven-year-olds achieving at least the expected levels in core subjects was higher than last year, except for Welsh.
The percentage of 11-year-olds achieving at least the expected level in teacher assessments was higher than in 2004 in English and mathematics. It dropped by 1% and 2% in Welsh and science respectively.
At Key Stage Three, the percentage of pupils achieving at least the expected level in both teacher assessments and tests was equal to or higher than in 2004 in all subjects except for science tests.
Jane Davidson, minister for education and lifelong learning, said, 'It is excellent news that we have continued to build on last year's successes for so many subjects across all Key Stages.
'In Key Stage One, pupils continue to perform exceptionally well with between 84% and 89% of pupils achieving the expected levels in each of the core subjects.
'Once again we can be confident that our seven-year-olds are moving into Key Stage Two on a very sound foundation.'
This year was the first year that tests were not a statutory requirement for 11-year-olds.
Ms Davidson said, 'I am very pleased to note that this seems to have had little impact on the quality of teacher assessments, upholding our firm belief in the value of our teachers' professional judgements.'
The results for 11-year-olds show improvements in English and maths, giving the best-ever performance for these subjects at Key Stage Two.
Over three-quarters of pupils achieved or exceeded the expected level in each core subject - maths, English, Welsh and science.
Ms Davidson added, 'These results continue the upwards trend for performance in Wales, pupils, teachers and parents are to be congratulated. However, we must not be complacent and must continue to build on these successes to make Wales a truly learning country.'
