PHILADELPHIA, Sept. 13 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The Philadelphia Education Fund and the School District of Philadelphia will host 250 student teachers on Thursday, September 15 to celebrate their arrival to Philadelphia's classrooms and encourage their future success within the District. The event, being held at the Franklin Institute from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., is part of the new Student Teacher Pipeline to the Future initiative, a joint venture between the District and the Ed Fund.
Launched in June 2005, Student Teacher Pipeline to the Future is designed to enhance the student teacher experience and ultimately increase the number of Philadelphia schools recruiting from a highly qualified pool of newly certified teachers. This year's target is to recruit and place 1,100 student teachers and 100 non-teaching interns in District schools, especially in traditionally hard-to- staff schools and positions. The initiative was adopted in response to the District's desire to seize the opportunity offered by the site-based selection process to position highly qualified student teachers in Philadelphia schools. The intention is to create a mutually positive experience for student teachers and schools that sets the stage for the site-based selection process.
"We are excited to welcome these student teachers to Philadelphia," said Carol Fixman, executive director of the Philadelphia Education Fund. "Through the Student Teacher Pipeline to the Future initiative, we expect more student teachers to make the School District of Philadelphia their first choice for employment after graduation."
The Student Teacher Celebration being held on September 15 is part of this ongoing initiative, which began with an intense student teacher workshop hosted in August by the Philadelphia Education Fund. The student teachers attending the event, all from regional colleges and universities, will receive numerous resource materials for use in their classrooms throughout the semester. They will also listen to welcome remarks from the School District of Philadelphia CEO Paul G. Vallas and Chief Academic Officer Gregory Thornton. Jan Gillespie-Walton, associate superintendent, Curriculum and Instruction of the Camden, NJ School District (retired), will be the keynote speaker at the event.
