Defiant School Stays Open Without Charter

Though its state charter ran out after the closing school bell yesterday, Roxbury Charter High School officials said the school would be open Monday - with or without state accreditation.
"Students and parents will be here and instruction will continue," said Cornelius Chapman, a board member of the school.
Wednesday, the state Board of Education, citing ongoing administrative and financial gaffes, voted to revoke the school's charter effective yesterday.
State Department of Education spokeswoman Heidi Perlman said opening the school to students without a charter will make it a "renegade school," operating without state funds or public school status.
School officials said they intend to appeal the state board's decision and planned to file a request for relief in court Monday.
At the time of the state board vote, many parents of the school had not registered their children in other schools. Stephona Stokes, whose son attends the school, blasted state education officials for ignoring her requests for information about other available charter schools.
Stokes said she did receive information from the city about enrolling her child in Boston public schools, but had not yet decided where to enroll him. "I guess I will know when that day comes," she said.
