ZACHARY - Jonathan Benda is a candidate for the Zachary Community School Board's District 8 seat in the Oct. 15 primary election.
Benda, 45 and a Republican, has been an interim member of the nine-member board since the resignation earlier this year of Richard "Chip" Moore, who was elected to a district judgeship.
Benda and his wife, Angela, have two children, Grant, 18, who attended Zachary public schools and now attends LSU, and Larke, 15, a Zachary High School sophomore.
Jonathan Benda is a business and corporate lawyer with Phelps Dunbar, a regional law firm.
"I am in my 20th year of practice," he said in his statement of candidacy.
"I attended only public schools through my high school graduation, then got an undergraduate degree from Princeton University and a law degree from the LSU law school. I graduated from high school at the top of my class and graduated from Princeton and law school with honors," Benda said.
He said his business and personal experience give him the tools to be a productive board member.
"A good public school system is the very heart of a healthy community. Zachary can be extremely proud of its outstanding school system," he said.
Benda said he will work to ensure that each student is given opportunities to reach his or her potential, make resources available to the teachers to sustain their enthusiasm for teaching, and monitor school spending to be sure it is used wisely for maximum effect.
"I have been extremely proud to have been associated with the Zachary Community School Board. I offer the background, experience and energy to have a positive impact on the city of Zachary and on its schools," Benda said.
Republican Reginald D. "Donnie" Dykes Jr. also is a candidate for the seat.
