Norfolk Public Schools Wins $500,000 Education Award

Posted on: Thursday, 22 September 2005, 00:00 CDT

WASHINGTON - A Virginia school district won the nation's top prize in public education on Tuesday, earning $500,000 for showing consistent improvement by its students.

Norfolk Public Schools, a 36,700-student district, won the largest share of the $1 million Broad Prize for Public Education. The award annually honors urban districts that make big gains in test scores, particularly among poor and minority students.

An award finalist for the third straight year, Norfolk will get $500,000 for college scholarships. The other four finalists will receive $125,000 each: Aldine Independent School Districts near Houston, Boston Public Schools, the New York City Department of Education and San Francisco Unified School District.

More than 80 districts were eligible for the prize this year.

In 2004, more than three in four Norfolk schools made their academic goals under federal education law, which requires progress among all major racial and income groups of students. The district has shown steady improvement in reading and math by elementary school children.

More than 70 percent of the district's students are minorities, and almost 60 percent are eligible for free or reduced school lunches, an indication of a district's poverty level.
