Sep. 29--The U.S. Department of Education has awarded a four-year, $800,000 grant to the University of Texas of the Permian Basin to train special-education teachers.
The grant is part of the federal "Project SHARE" program. The money is to be used to prepare 39 teachers to work with students with disabilities.
"There is a shortage of highly qualified special-education teachers in the Permian Basin area," Karen Smith, UTPB Associate Professor of the School of Education, said in a news release. "We need to have our best teachers working in special education, because they will require additionally specialized training."
UTPB received an initial award of $198,360, with three more similar awards to follow during the next three years.
Potential special-education teachers going to UTPB can receive monetary assistance with tuition, books and fees needed to complete an intensive teacher certification program -- which ends with full licensure in special education and English as a Second Language.
The grant also allows for students in the program to participate in cultural proficiency programs and to attend state and national conferences on special education.
The grant may be good news for Permian Basin school districts as well.
Ector County Independent School District public information officer Mike Adkins said ECISD has a shortage of special-ed teachers.
"It's one of those areas you always need teachers in," Adkins said.
