Writing Conference for High School Teachers and Students
Posted on: Monday, 3 October 2005, 12:00 CDT
On October 27, high school teachers and students from across New England will have an opportunity to improve their literary skills by attending the Media Matters Writing Conference, a free daylong event designed to motivate young writers and give teachers the tools necessary to promote their students' success.
The University of Massachusetts Boston will host the conference, presented by the Boston Globe Foundation, WriteBoston and UMass Boston, at their Campus Center.
Teachers and students will participate in workshops addressing topics such as news writing, weblogs, research in the information age, creative writing, careers in writing, race and gender issues in the media, and getting published.
The daylong conference will include speeches from Boston Globe columnist Derrick Z. Jackson and New York Times reporter and education columnist Michael Winerip. Winerip is also the author of "Adam Canfield of the Slash", a young adult novel about young investigative reporters who write for their school newspaper, The Slash.
The day will conclude with a "swap-shop" and book sale, where participants will have the chance to trade contact information, purchase books, and learn about various teen publications and organizations.
The conference is part of an initiative of the Boston Globe Foundation and WriteBoston, focused on developing the writing proficiency of Boston's high school students. The same partnership produces T.i.P., Boston Teens in Print, a citywide teen newspaper written by teens for teens and distributed to Boston's public high schools and libraries.
WriteBoston is a citywide initiative devoted to providing writing support resources for teachers and students. UMass Boston offers undergraduate and graduate study in more than 150 fields and serves K-12 school systems through a range of pre-collegiate programs and dozens of partnerships with individual schools. Other conference organizers include Project Think Different, the Boston Writing Project, and Teen Empowerment.
