San Pedro Schools Nominated for State's Distinguished List

Five San Pedro area schools made an eligibility list for the state's highest academic honor in 2006 as a distinguished school.

The schools must still apply and win the designation by competing with the 2,430 other eligible campuses. About 300 schools will eventually be selected out of the 5,900 elementary schools in the state, said Jeffrey Zettel, the manager of the awards unit of the California Department of Education.

The state is giving Crestwood Street Elementary, Park Western Place Elementary, Seventh Street Elementary, Taper Avenue Elementary and White Point Elementary until Dec. 7 to apply for the honor. The schools must give notice that they are applying by Nov. 7.

"Just being nominated is a big honor," said David Gonzalez, Crestwood Street Elementary's principal. "I was blown away. We're not working for honors, but it's always good to be recognized."

The Los Angeles Unified School District schools were selected because they are among the top-half in achievement in a widely used state achievement index. The schools had at least a 731 on the Academic Performance Index.

Schools are rated with a score between 200 and 1,000 each year.

State education officials will name the winners in early 2006.

In September, Park Western Place Elementary scored a 906 on this year's performance index to lead schools in the area. Later in the month, national educators named it a Blue Ribbon School. Only 295 school in the country were given the honor.
