Kaneland enrollment has increased 8.5 percent this year.
As of Sept. 30, the district had 4,000 students enrolled. That is an increase from 3,688 students enrolled on the same day last year.
But much of that growth is in the lower grades, which will only exacerbate space concerns as the students move on in school, said Superintendent Charles McCormick.
Kindergarten through fifth grade enrollment grew 12.3 percent over the last year; middle school, 6.8 percent; and high school 4.7 percent.
Even with the new McDole Elementary School opening in Montgomery this year, McCormick estimated that if current trends hold, the district could be out of elementary and middle school space by around 2009.
The district has had about a 9 percent increase in student population over the past three years.
