Oct. 23--COLTON -- LOOKING FOR BOND OVERSIGHT COMMITTEE MEMBERS: The Colton Joint Unified School District is looking for community members for its Bond Oversight Committee.

The panel meets quarterly to review expenditures and inform the public on the progress of bond-supported school construction projects.

The committee is scheduled to meet Nov. 30 to review applications.

There are four two-year-term positions open. The meeting for new members will be Jan. 18.

Candidates must live in the school district and complete and return an interest form available at the district office, 1212 Valencia Drive.

SAN BERNARDINO -- MORE THAN $51,000 TO AID STORM VICTIMS: The San Bernardino City Unified School District has donated more than $51,000 to organizations that help hurricane victims.

The district donated $43,222.64 to the American Red Cross during the Board of Education meeting on Tuesday. The money was raised through coin drives, read-a-thons and car washes during September.

In addition, the district raised $938.90 for Habitat for Humanity, $1,057.77 for Save the Children and $5,956.17 for the Salvation Army.

SAN BERNARDINO -- TEXTBOOK ADOPTION PROCESS UNDER WAY: The San Bernardino City Unified School District is inviting the public to view the new middle-school history/social studies textbooks being considered for adoption for the 2006-07 school year.

Textbooks and related materials are available for public review from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. weekdays through Nov. 30 at the Learning Resource Display Center, 4595 Hallmark Parkway.

A final selection will be made in the spring. For more information on the textbook adoption process, contact Georgette Oakley at (909) 381-1190.

FONTANA -- SEQUOIA MIDDLE SCHOOL GAINS COUNSELING HONOR: The American School Counselors Association has awarded Sequoia Middle School with the RAMP designation, given to schools that provide an exemplary research-based counseling program that shows how students can succeed as a result of what counselors do.

The association is a Virginia-based nonprofit organization that recognizes school counselors' efforts to help students focus on academic, personal, social and career development.

CALIMESA -- ALTERNATIVE ROUTES TO NEW MIDDLE SCHOOL SOUGHT: Yucaipa-Calimesa Joint Unified School District officials are still looking for alternative routes to access Mesa View Middle School in to help alleviate traffic on Avenue L.

Calimesa's first public school is unlikely to open until 2007.

A court settlement hinders the school from opening until a south access road can be built. Avenue L is the only road to the school right now.

Developer Fiesta Homes is responsible for constructing the road, but project plans have not yet been approved by the city.

The school, expected to house 1,200 students, was built with a large gym and other facilities. 2010, the school is expected to be converted to a high school.

SAN BERNARDINO -- ANTHROPOLOGY DEPT. RECEIVES CERTIFICATION: Cal State San Bernardino's Department of Anthropology has received certification by the Register of Professional Archaeologists.

For an institution to receive the certification, all instructors must be individually certified and the school must have a research design method and instruct students in all practices of archaeology, including excavation, lab analysis and field reporting.

SAN BERNARDINO -- COMMUNITY COLLEGES RECEIVE GRANTS: The San Bernardino Community College District was recently awarded $5 million worth of Title V grants.

The money is to be spent on improving technology resources at San Bernardino Valley College and Crafton Hills College in Yucaipa. It will also be used to improve grant-writing abilities and institutional advancements that could make the colleges open to other grants.
