Central City News: Anguish for Unzila in Fight for School

Posted on: Thursday, 27 October 2005, 12:00 CDT

By Andy Shipley

A BRIGHT young student has missed nearly two months of school because education chiefs have ordered her to travel eight miles to and from classes.

Unzila Hussain, aged 11, wanted to go to Hodge Hill Girls' School, close to her Hancock Road home in Saltley and where sister Salqa got eight GCSEs.

But the city council turned down her first choice, and her second two choices, only offering Unzila a place at The International School in Gressel Lane, Kitts Green - four miles and two bus journeys away.

Dad Pervez, aged 43, said: "There's no way my daughter should have to catch two buses to school every day. She's only 11. Anything could happen to her."

Unzila left Shaw Hill Primary School in the summer with hopes of being a doctor but has still to take up a place at senior school because of the row.

Pervez, a car sprayer with Highgate-based Bourne, and Unzila's mum Ghazala, aged 30, wanted her to go to the same school which helped 16year-old Salqa get two As and six Bs in her June GCSE results.

But Unzila, who has two younger sisters, Iqra, aged six, and one- year-old Hubba, and a brother Huzaifa, aged four, has been left at home.

"She's really upset that she's not going to school," said Pervez. "She had an excellent record at primary school and never took a day off."

A city council spokesman said Mr Hussain's appeal over the refusal of a place at Park View Secondary School failed because it was almost two months late. The appeal over Hodge Hill Girls was dismissed by an independent panel and an appeal for Saltley School is now being considered"We urge Mr Hussain to take up the school place offered for his daughter as soon as possible," said the spokesman. "A member of the education welfare service will be visiting Unzila and her father at home to discuss future action if she does not attend school
