Posted on: Wednesday, 2 November 2005, 09:01 CST

PHILADELPHIA, Nov. 2 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The Philadelphia Education Fund will mark a milestone anniversary on Nov. 2. The 20th Anniversary Celebration Dinner & Inaugural "Eddy" Awards, held at the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, will commemorate the Ed Fund's accomplishments as the major advocate for quality public education in the Philadelphia area. Four award recipients who represent the heart of the Ed Fund's efforts will be honored. Civic leader and School District of Philadelphia alumnus, Stanley C. Tuttleman, will receive the Star Alumnus Eddy Award.

"This is a monumental year for the Philadelphia Education Fund, as we celebrate two decades of bringing innovative change to Philadelphia schools. We have provided professional development to thousands of highly qualified teachers in the District; we have brought schools, universities and businesses together to improve our children's education; we have awarded millions of dollars in 'last dollar' college scholarships to graduates of the public schools; we have provided college counseling to more than 100,000 Philadelphia students, and that is just the beginning," said Carol S. Fixman, Executive Director of the Philadelphia Education Fund. "This celebration will recognize these achievements and will also honor those individuals and community groups whose success and commitment symbolize our vision."

Hundreds of guests will help ring in the first-ever "Eddy" Awards for excellence in education. The Star Alumnus Eddy Award, which will honor Tuttleman, is reserved for a successful alumnus/a of the Philadelphia public schools. Tuttleman is a graduate of Overbrook High School and Sulzburger Middle School. He is the former chairman of the board of Mast Industries and a noted philanthropist whose community affiliations are numerous. His success represents what the Ed Fund believes is possible for each and every Philadelphia student and symbolizes what our organization is working so hard to achieve.

The Star Commitment to Education Eddy Award, presented by GlaxoSmithKline, will honor Natalie S. Allen for her extraordinary commitment to education. Ms. Allen has dedicated her professional life to better preparing public school students for career success. Through her success in leadership roles at the Philadelphia Academies, Inc. and the Private Industry Council, she encapsulates the spirit of many of the Ed Fund's programs.

The Community for Camden City, NJ Public Schools will receive the Star Community Commitment to Education Eddy Award. This coalition of parents, students, educators, residents, government officials and community leaders has been instrumental in creating a small, high performing high school in Camden. The work of this organization represents the Ed Fund's commitment to community engagement as an essential part of school reform. It also represents the Ed Fund's more recent outreach to other parts of the tri-state region.

The Ed Fund will present the Rising Star Eddy Award to Stephen Burton, a recent graduate of West Philadelphia High School. A freshman at Millersville University, Stephen is member of the Ed Fund's College Access and Philadelphia Scholars programs, and he is a recipient of the Board of Governor's scholarship. This award represents the Ed Fund's firm belief in the unlimited potential of Philadelphia's youth.

The Philadelphia Education Fund's 20th Anniversary Celebration Dinner & Inaugural "Eddy" Awards are being sponsored by GlaxoSmithKline, IBM, Platform Learning and Wachovia. For more details on the event please visit http://www.philaedfund.org or call 215-665-1400.
