A program that teaches students how to find careers is getting ready to send a group to a national conference - and could use some help getting them there.
The Jobs for Arizona's Graduates program, in the Sunnyside Unified School District, helps students deal with personal and educational issues that keep them from pursuing their career dreams, and even works with them after high school graduation to make sure they find the best jobs.
One place these students learn how to shape and reach their goals is at the Student National Leadership Conference, to be held in December in Washington, D.C. About 25 juniors and seniors from Sunnyside and Desert View high schools are expected to attend.
The trips could cost as much as $705 for each student, and there are only funds to cover airfare for about five students, said Rita Ornelas, the JAG multiyear coordinator for Sunnyside. Students will have to pay for the rest.
About 1,000 students in Pima and Maricopa counties participate in the state branch of the Jobs for America's Graduates program. It is not known how many Arizona students plan to attend the December conference.
Ornelas said many of the students will be traveling outside Arizona for the first time and will meet such state lawmakers and celebrities as Gov. Janet Napolitano and Deidre Downs, Miss America 2005.
They'll work with with peers to discuss how to get the best jobs in the country. When they return, Ornelas said, they'll pass on their knowledge to other JAG students at their schools.
Ornelas said the JAG students meet every day for class credit and participate in community service projects.
"This class is all about options," she said. "They're going to pick a career and find out the options it takes to get there."
