BURLINGAME -- A new preschool program that will blend children and those with special needs will open this fall.

Community Gatepath, the Burlingame Elementary School District and Burlingame Parks and Recreation Department are working together to open Early Learners Preschool.

It will be a "high-quality" program that will prepare 14 to 16 students for kindergarten. Students with special needs will get speech, occupational and physical therapies, said Pamela McCabe, director of special education for the district.

McCabe and Gabrielle Jones from Community Gatepath hope the program will serve as a model and expand to other districts in San Mateo County and eventually the state. Community Gatepath is one of the oldest and largest nonprofit organization that serves people with disabilities.

"We're putting the students together at an early age to develop social lessons of tolerance, respect and learning from each other," Jones said. "The goal and benefit is building a young society -- that when they get into a school, there's not any sort of tension between the different student populations."

Early Learners Preschool will begin in the fall and end in spring 2006 at Washington Elementary at 801 Howard Ave.

Twenty percent of the enrollment will be saved for children with special needs. Deadline to register at the Parks and Recreation Department is July 1 at

4 p.m. The class is for children who are 4 or 5 years old as of Dec. 2.

For more information, call the Recreation Center at (650) 558- 7300 or visit the center at 850 Burlingame Ave. to register. Enrollment will be on a first-come, first accepted basis.
