Schools' Community-Based Learning Projects Win Grants

The Portland Education Partnership has given five Reachout grants to Portland public schools for projects ranging from health fairs to art projects.
Awarded to Portland public school teachers and students, the grants are aimed at bolstering student achievement through community- based learning. Grants were given to:
n The West School for a community service partnership between high school students and the Animal Refuge League and a weekly yoga class for first-, second- and third-graders, $600.
n Lincoln Middle School for gifted visual art students who will create and frame their artwork and present it to the community, $300. n Nathan Clifford Elementary for a student-organized health fair, $200. n Adams Elementary School for its new photography club, which is producing an enrichment activities brochure, taking pictures for the school newspaper and documenting a move to the new elementary school next year, $300.
The grants are funded through the Portland Education Partnership, the Margaret E. Burnham Charitable Foundation and the Edward H. Daveis Benevolent Fund.
