Gas Line Break Interrupts School

November 8, 2005

By Jesse Olivarez, The Daily Oklahoman

Nov. 8–More than 300 students were evacuated Monday from Shidler Elementary School in southeast Oklahoma City after workers struck a gas line, authorities said.

About 11:10 a.m., Oklahoma Gas and Electric Co. workers were digging to install a pole when they struck a 2-inch gas line about 18 inches below the ground’s surface near SE 15 and Byers Avenue, fire Maj. Brian Stanaland said.

Along with students, six people from nearby homes also were evacuated.

Six school buses took the students to Southeast High School, where they ate lunch.

Stanaland said the leak was stopped about 12:10 p.m. and the students returned about 1 p.m.

There were no injuries.
