Nov. 11--President Kathleen Nelson drove a Bobcat on Thursday afternoon to break ground for an addition to Lake Superior College.
The college celebrated the start of construction of an $11.2 million, 46,000-square-foot academic and student services addition. Funding was made available through the 2005 state bonding bill.
The project will add high-tech classrooms, computer labs, space for work force development and student services. It is the first expansion on campus in more than 10 years.
"We're very excited to start on this building after more than six years of planning and advocating for funding," Nelson said in a prepared statement.
The expansion is expected to be ready for students in fall 2007.
Lake Superior College enrollment has grown by more than 50 percent in the past six years and is one of the fastest-growing colleges in the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System.
