A VILLAGE school which caters for just 35 pupils, all children of travellers from the Crays Hill site, costs more per head than private education.
Essex County Council spends almost Pounds 7,000 a year on teaching each child at Crays Hill Primary, Pounds 1,000 more than the fees at a nearby private school.
The cost of educating the 35 youngsters at a school designed for more than 250 was revealed in a confidential report released yesterday under the Freedom of Information Act.
Last year, local parents withdrew more than 200 pupils, claiming standards had dropped after children of travellers enrolled.
The crisis led to the resignation of the head teacher and ten governors.
Stephen Castle, of Essex County Council, said: 'The council maintains a number of small schools, some smaller than Crays Hill, which offer good quality education and operate within their budgets.
'These schools are all considered economically viable.'
