Primary School League Tables: Manor Thrives on the Great Outdoors

Pupils at Manor Junior and Infant School in Bilston start with below average attainment but when they leave they are among the top- performing pupils in the region.
The school has an above average 22 per cent of pupils on free school meals and children with an ethnic background - two indicators used to measure challenging circumstances.
Despite this, every youngster meets the required level four standard in Key Stage Two literacy, numeracy and science tests. Some even go beyond to achieve level five.
The achievement makes Manor Wolverhampton's top performing primary and the best in the country for improving the attainment of pupils between tests taken at ages seven and 11.
Headteacher Anita Cliff said: 'It is down to very good teaching and an exciting curriculum with lots of practical hands-on learning.'
She added bringing learning alive with trips and visitors was the key to engaging young minds.
'It is a very rich curriculum where our children do a lot of outdoor activity. We have 17 out-of-school clubs offering anything from drama to karate so children are excited about every day and they want to stay here.
'It is about bringing it alive and engaging them. If children are engaged and excited about their learning they will want to learn.'
Teachers at the school bring a wide range of teaching styles to bear to ensure all pupils thrive, said Ms Cliff.
The school's current success has been hard fought. When Ms Cliff took over as headteacher seven years ago, it was under-achieving.
But for the last three years it has topped the league in Wolverhampton.
'We moved from 50 per cent getting level four to 100 per cent getting level four,' said Ms Cliff.
'In addition, 78 per cent of children achieve level five. It is the same sort of children, but we have made the learning environment more stimulating. We have completely refurbished the building.'
