Dec. 7--Teachers in the East Grand Forks Public Schools voted Tuesday to accept a two-year contract that would give them a 3.5 percent salary increase each year.
"It was an agreement both sides could live with, and we look forward to the (School) Board ratifying it Thursday night," said Mark Swenson, chief negotiator for the East Grand Forks Education Association.
Swenson said about 90 teachers attended a meeting about the contract Tuesday afternoon, and 86 percent voted to accept the contract. Some teachers couldn't attend because of coaching and other after-school activities.
The contract is scheduled to go before the School Board at the Truth-in-Taxation hearing at 6 p.m. Thursday in the East Grand Forks Senior High School library.
Under the tentative agreement, both sides agreed to a 3.5 percent increase for both years. The first year, full-time teachers would share the total increase and get $1,662 each.
The second year of the contract, the 3.5 percent would be applied over the salary schedule with each step of the schedule seeing a 2.33 percent increase in salary. The remaining 1.17 percent would be used to help younger teachers move from one salary step to another. The most experienced staff would not advance any steps but still would see a 2.33 percent increase over this school year's salary.
The School District's benefit contributions also would increase 3.5 percent over each year. The cost to the School District would be an increase of $246,719 for salaries, teacher retirement and Social Security the first year and $247,754 the second year.
