Two Teens Arrested in School Bomb Scare: NO EXPLOSIVES FOUND AT SOBRATO HIGH

Posted on: Saturday, 17 December 2005, 15:00 CST

By Elise Ackerman, San Jose Mercury News, Calif., San Jose Mercury News, Calif.

Dec. 17--Morgan Hill police evacuated Sobrato High School briefly this week and arrested two students who were allegedly researching explosive devices in order to blow up the school, authorities said Friday.

"The information we have at this time indicates they were conspiring to place numerous devices around the school," police Cmdr. Joe Sampson said.

Sampson said the students had been planning the attack for about a month. However, high school administrators only learned about the plot Thursday morning after details were overheard by another student.

Police were en route to a classroom to interview the alleged conspirators when the school's fire alarm sounded. Officers initially feared that an attack was in progress, but it turned out that the alarm had gone off accidentally.

Students and faculty members waited outside the school for approximately 40 minutes while officers searched the school. Normal activity resumed about 10:10 a.m.

Sampson said no explosive materials were found at the school or at the students' homes Thursday night.

He said investigators are still trying to work out the motivation of the alleged bombers, two freshman boys aged 14 and 15 who appear to have been alienated from their peers. "We believe that to some degree they were not completely dialed in with the rest of the campus community," Sampson said.

The students were booked into juvenile hall on suspicion of criminal conspiracy. Their names were not released because they are juveniles.
