WEST MIDLANDS SUCCESS STORIES 2005: Students Take on More Responsibility

Posted on: Wednesday, 28 December 2005, 03:02 CST

THE enterprising culture that is growing quickly at the school has meant students taking on far more responsibility for their own learning in recent months.

The School Council has been at the forefront of much of the school improvement activities in the past year and perhaps one of the most exciting initiatives introduced has been the Senior Student Scheme, where Year 10 and 11 students have been given the opportunity to apply for extra responsibility in school.

Following a rigorous selection process, including a weekend's team building at an outward bound centre, 22 students have joined the scheme and have elected the first head boy and head girl in the school's history - Ajay Sethi and Natasha Ellis-Knight.

Head teacher Martin Bayliss said: "At Holyhead we aim to educate and equip students to become major contributors to, leaders in and valued representatives of our community.

"Our aims are to nurture a love of learning, promote excellence in all areas of work, appearance, courtesy and behaviour and to provide access to world class educational experiences, teachers, and facilities.

"Our mission statement is quite simple - 'Learning without Limits.' "Our belief is that there are no barriers to learning that we cannot overcome when working together." Holyhead is a very popular school, oversubscribed year-on-year with long waiting lists in each year group. This is a testament to the hard work of all staff, students and parents.

Holyhead is a school that prides itself on being at the centre of a vibrant and aspirational community.

It would appear that all those involved with the school believe that there is something of a renaissance under way in the north west of the city and it is clear that Holyhead has a key role to play in raising standards in the community and improving opportunities for the young people of Soho and Handsworth wards
