D-11 Board OKs Charter, Denies Another ; 3rd School Takes State Route to Approval

The Colorado Springs School District 11 board approved one charter school application Wednesday night, but denied a second one.

A third charter school -- Colorado Distance and Electronic Learning Academy -- withdrew its application; Chief Financial Officer Glenn Gustafson said the school was approved by the state Charter School Institute.

The Charter School Institute is another way for charter schools to be approved without approval from a local district.

The board approved the application for the Space, Technology and Arts Academy, with the stipulation that the percentage of money spent at the classroom level at the charter school would match the percentage spent in district classrooms.

The school, focusing on space, technology and arts, would serve students in kindergarten through fifth grade in the first year and grow to serve students through eighthgrade.

The board denied the application for Transition 2 Success Academy, a school for ninth- and 10th-grade students struggling academically in traditional schools.

The board must still negotiate a contract with STAR Academy before it can open next fall. Including STAR Academy, D-11 has eight charter schools.
