St. Johns County Postpones School Rezoning Plan for a Year Elementary and Middle School Students Along County Road 210 Are Getting a Reprieve.

ST. AUGUSTINE --A yearlong postponement of a rezoning plan for middle school and elementary school students along County Road 210 in St. Johns County was announced Tuesday by Superintendent Joseph Joyner.

The announcement was greeted enthusiastically by the parents who showed up at the monthly School Board meeting to oppose the proposed plan.

Parents were worried that rezoning, which could shift students between schools to relieve overcrowding, would disrupt the lives of their children.

"Thank you for the delay," parent Tassie Bird said.

The postponement will allow the school system to explore other proposals to relieve overcrowding, Joyner said.

The largest growth spurt at one of the schools, Timberlin Creek Elementary School, does not occur for two years, he said. The district believes the school can use relocatable classrooms and handle 1,250 students.

"This allows another year of stability for students who have been moved three times in their elementary career," Joyner said.

In a separate announcement, Joyner said school attorneys and property owner Gate Petroleum are preparing documents for an "option contract" for land for a new high school off Florida A1A in Ponte Vedra Beach, a site commonly known as Talbot's.

Further information about the price and construction schedule will not be available until the contract is complete, a spokeswoman said.

The school, once projected to open in 2007, is now expected to open in 2008.

Some county residents have opposed the Talbot's site, saying it is too small for a school and that it would create traffic problems on A1A. But the School Board voted in April 2004 to place the new school on the 30-acre site. ken.lewis@jacksonville.com, (904) 819- 3546
