The Tribune, Mesa, Ariz., Prep Notebook Column: Saguaro?S Porras Commits to Stanford

Jan. 10--Saguaro High running back/ defensive back Tyler Porras made a verbal commitment Saturday to attend Stanford after learning his SAT score was good enough to qualify for the school.

"His grades were fine," said Saguaro coach Mike Reardon. "He just needed to get the SAT score." The 6-foot-1, 175-pound Porras rushed for 1,343 yards as a junior. His numbers dropped last season due to injuries and an inexperienced offensive line.

Porras, who also was considering some Ivy League schools as well as Northern Arizona University, most likely will play cornerback or safety for the Cardinal, according to Reardon.

"He's a good person," Reardon said. "He worked hard in the program." BASKETBALL Imadiyi to return: Corona del Sol center Sean Imadiyi missed last Friday's 77-61 victory over nonregion rival Chandler but is expected back for the Aztecs' games Thursday and Friday.

Corona coach Sam Duane Jr. said Imadiyi was elbowed in the mouth last Wednesday at practice. He was held out of the Chandler game with dental issues. Duane said Imadiyi, who is averaging 17.5 points and 10.3 rebounds a game, would be ready for a nonregion game against Skyline Thursday and the first of two 5A Division I Central Region meetings Friday with Desert Vista.

Tough going: Things haven't been easy this season for defending 3A boys champion Fountain Hills.

The Falcons have four starters from last season's 32-1 team but have been beset by injuries and departures.

"We've lost four players for a variety of reasons," Falcons coach Cain Jagodzinski said. "We lost a lot of the supporting cast." Two key departures came at once, when brothers Owen (a 6-3 senior) and Matt (a 6-6 sophomore) Santos moved to Virginia. Those two would have provided some inside scoring off the bench.

The Falcons did get a transfer, 6-5 Brian Hadley, who helped offset the loss of the Santos brothers, but he's been out for eight games with a leg injury.

On the outside, guard Tyler Ruch has been out all season with recurring back problems. He was a key reserve last season and would have likely been a starter this year.

"Not having those kids around that we're counting on hurts," Jagodzinski said of his 8-7 team.

The Falcons have lost five games to 5A schools, one game to 2A defending champion Scottsdale Christian and one to 3A West Region foe Mohave Valley River Valley. Seniors Martin Ort and Dan Thomas continue to lead the way, averaging 19.9 and 17.3 points a game, respectively.
