Muscogee, Harris Schools in Perdue Bond Request: Construction Set for March on Middle School in North Columbus

By Harry Franklin, Columbus Ledger-Enquirer, Ga.

Jan. 13--The Muscogee County School District would receive $1.228 million to help build a new middle school in north Columbus and the Harris County School District would get $764,688 to help build a gymnasium at Harris County Carver Middle School if the Georgia Legislature approves Gov. Sonny Perdue's proposed $383 million school construction bond proposal.

Construction could begin in March on a new middle school in the same area as Northside High School and a new elementary school off of Veterans Parkway, said Rexon Byrd, senior project manager for the Muscogee County Schools Construction Department.

Arco Builders of Newnan was awarded the project under a request for proposals and is expected to provide the school district with a guaranteed maximum price for the project in three or four weeks, Byrd said Thursday.

The middle school should open with about 875 students in the fall of 2007. With good weather, construction should take about 10 months. Much of the site work has been done.

Harris County Schools Superintendent Susan Andrews said Thursday that school officials had considered renovating the old gym, but realized because of its age, the district would be entitled to state funds to help replace it. The gym should cost about $1 million, with the rest of the money coming from an existing education special purpose local option sales tax.

If the funds are approved during this legislative session and the bonds are sold, construction could begin this summer, she said. The gym should be completed in the summer of 2007.

Only a handful of school projects in southwest Georgia are included in the governor's request.
