Jan. 18--The Brownsville Independent School District board of trustees Tuesday reviewed Superintendent Michael Zolkoski's second full year with the district and approved several program renewals and construction projects.
As an employee matter, the superintendent's evaluation was not open to the public, but trustee Herman Otis Powers Jr. said the review was standard procedure.
"I like the direction we're heading into and I like his focus on curriculum," said Powers, who was not on the board when Zolkoski joined BISD in 2004. "They hired a good leader. ... I'll support his endeavors."
Most items, including a curriculum management plan, were approved without discussion during the meeting, which is the first following winter break. Following discussion, the board approved an additional $1.6 million to 12 architectural, engineering and construction companies for various projects.
Board members received praise for School Board Appreciation month, recognized statewide in January.
Several schools and school clusters showed their gratitude to board members with hand-painted banners, gift baskets and vocal support.
"As all of you were elected, so was I," said Brianna Leal, student council treasurer at Villa Nueva Elementary. "I am here to thank you for all the wise decisions you have concluded throughout these exciting years."
Not all public comments were so friendly.
Association of Brownsville Educators president Alberto Alegria expressed anger at the board's decision to move elections to November and in the processes extending each of their terms by six months.
Fellow teacher and union member George Borrego said some teachers are required to work longer hours each day over their objections and without intervention by board members.
Two audience members, Alicia Putegnat and Dagoberto Barrera, suggested new names for the in-construction Elementary No. 140. Putegnat suggested former Brownsville teacher, principal, superintendent and junior college dean Ben Brite. Barrera asked them to consider Barbara Warburton, who taught for many years in Brownsville without getting into administration.
District officials said nominations can be suggested or endorsed by calling (956) 548-8000 for more information.
