Jan. 18--COLUMBUS, Ohio -- DeAaron Williams, who left the University of Wisconsin men's basketball team earlier this month, will not resume his career at an Illinois junior college after all, and apparently will enroll at Bradley.
Williams, who two sources said would have been academically ineligible at UW this semester, was set to enroll at Illinois Central College in his hometown of Peoria, Ill., this semester, according to Williams' prep coach Dave Mott.
Mott told the Peoria Journal Star that Williams, a redshirt freshman who left the Badgers Jan. 5, would spend one year at ICC before joining another Division I program.
But ICC coach Tony Wysinger said Williams, a 6-foot-4 swingman who practiced with ICC last Tuesday, did not enroll at the school by last Friday's deadline. The school does not accept late enrollments.
"He was coming here to get some of those things in order," Wysinger said. "Next thing I know he's not coming."
Wysinger said Williams told him he was planning to enroll at Bradley and continue his basketball career there. But as of Tuesday morning, Williams had yet to enroll at the school, according to an employee of Bradley's registrar's office. Bradley accepts second-semester enrollments until the middle of February, the employee said.
Wysinger also said Williams had shown interest in DePaul before choosing Bradley.
"I don't want to rush into anything," Williams told the Peoria Journal Star for Monday's editions. "I know I don't have a lot of time, but I just want to make sure I do the right thing."
Williams averaged 3.3 points and 2.6 rebounds in eight games this season.--
A big order Ryan utilized a smaller lineup to combat Northwestern's pressing and trapping defense Saturday, leaving big men Brian Butch, Greg Stiemsma and Jason Chappell on the bench for most of the second half.
That trio figures to pick up more minutes against a taller Ohio State team in a Big Ten Conference game tonight, particularly against Buckeyes center Terence Dials.
"It's going to depend on the flow of the game," Ryan said. "But Dials can play inside. He's got a left hand. He's got a right hand. He seems like he's in his best shape. So he's a force inside."
Dials is coming off a 19-point, 10-rebound performance in Sunday's double-overtime loss to Michigan State and is averaging a team-high 14.9 points and 7.2 rebounds per game this season. --
Big strides UW freshman swingman Joe Krabbenhoft is averaging 23 minutes and seven rebounds over the last two games. Krabbenhoft is second among Big Ten freshman in rebounding (4.0) during league play.
