Diane Fladmo Presides Over National Association of State Boards of Education

Posted on: Friday, 20 January 2006, 12:00 CST

ALEXANDRIA, Va., Jan. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Diane Fladmo, a member of the Montana state board of education, takes office today as the president of the National Association of State Boards of Education (NASBE). Her term will conclude in January 2007 when she will become immediate-past president.

"State board of education members are the critical nexus between the education system and the public. We occupy a unique place in the governance universe. We are both the public and the policymaker, straddling the inside and the outside of the public school system. Our job is to promote public support for education, and to oversee the efficient use within schools of the support we are able to marshal. My focus will be on providing the resources and assistance to state board members that will allow them to become the best education policymakers they can be," said Fladmo.

"Globalization, economic competitiveness, and national security make higher academic standards and better performance from students a national imperative. State board members are participating in these debates and are addressing these complex questions. But our greatest contribution will be in fostering the conditions that will nurture a student's intellectual growth to allow them to solve these challenges for themselves," Fladmo said.

Diane Fladmo has served on the Montana Board of Public Education since 1998 and is in her sixth year as vice-president. A former special education teacher, Fladmo is the Education Policy Specialist with the University of Montana's International Education Development Group, involved in projects developing curriculum, national assessments, and decentralizing education in foreign countries. She has previously served on the NASBE board of directors and in 2001 chaired a year-long NASBE commission examining state strategies to improve low-performing schools.

NASBE represents America's state and territorial boards of education and is the professional association of state board members. NASBE's primary mission is to strengthen state leadership in education policymaking and assure responsible lay governance of public education.
