Jan. 21--The churches of Christ "39th Annual Florida State Lectureship" will be held at the Ramada Plaza Beach Resort, 1500 Miracle Strip Parkway, Fort Walton Beach, Feb. 6-9.

Planners for the event have selected the theme "Current Crisis Challenging the Church in the 21st Century."

Walter Hulett Sr. of the Emerald Coast Church of Christ is the host minister and director of the lectureship.

For months, Church of Christ congregations in the Panhandle have been preparing for their church leaders and members to attend this lectureship, which will include speakers and participants from throughout Florida and the Southeast. Area citizens and church congregations are invited to attend any or all of the sessions, at no cost.

Hulett, the host minister, has been a gospel preacher for 47 years. He began the Sylvania Heights Church of Christ in Mary Esther in 1966 and was minister of the congregation for a total of 33 years. After he began the congregation, an Air Force assignment took him out of the area for four years. When he returned to the area, he also returned to the pulpit at Sylvania Heights and remained there until 2003, when he resigned from full time preaching. He continues to be active in the church's ministries with the Emerald Coast Church of Christ as a guest speaker.

The annual lectureship began among a few Florida Church of Christ congregations in 1967. Its pur- pose has been to strengthen the church and to declare the gospel of Christ, said Cecil Belk, Emerald Coast Church of Christ minister.

The event was begun by congregations whose members were predominantly black and has grown to draw people from throughout the Southeast and other parts of the country, Belk said.

The lectureship event has been held all over Florida and comes to the Fort Walton Beach-Pensacola area once every 10 years.

This year, ministers from Georgia, Alabama and Florida, including Belk of the Emerald Coast Church of Christ and Philip Box of the Niceville Church of Christ will be lectureship speakers.

The schedule is packed with sessions on Bible topics led by a variety of speakers.

Okaloosa County Commissioner Bill Roberts will welcome attendees during the opening session on Monday, Feb. 6, at 7 p.m.

Registration will take place Feb. 6 from 1-7 p.m. From 7-9 p.m., topics will include God Has Made Us All of One Blood by Eddie Harper, and The Misrepresentation of the Lord's Church by John Iverson.

On Feb. 7, sessions from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. will be led by 12 speakers on 12 topics. At 7 p.m., the agenda will include The Tragedy of Unfaithful Men Serving in Faith Positions by Prentiss Spivey and The Status of the Preacher in a Church without Elders by Matthew Moore.

On Feb. 8 from 9 to 5, 12 topics will be covered by 12 speakers. At 7 p.m., Harmon Wesley III will discuss The Church That Was Built by the Lord and Dr. W.W. Washington will discuss How to Grow a Great Church and How to Revive a Dead One.

On Feb. 9 from 9 a.m. until noon, five topics will be covered by five speakers. From 7-9 p.m., the leadership banquet will be held, with the keynote address by Dr. Freeman Wyche on the subject of "The Current Crisis Challenging the Church in the 21st Century." Registration to attend the banquet is required by Feb. 6.

Daily lectureship topics from 9 to 5 are scheduled at 30-minute intervals. On Tuesday and Wednesday two lectureship periods are designed exclusively for women.

A program schedule of this comprehensive Bible lectureship will be provided at the welcoming desk.
