Welsh Schools Facts

Posted on: Tuesday, 24 January 2006, 12:00 CST

SIR - Many aspects of your recent education report would appear to demonstrate a lack of personal experience of the work in Welsh schools.

The author comments on a shortage of teachers on a day when the numbers of teachers to be trained is being slashed. Suggesting that Welsh education being more expensive is misleading. Pupils learn much of the language through other subjects.

Schools are broadly paid on pupil numbers. In an industrial situation this would be termed as 'value added' with pupils gaining additional skills, English only education would therefore appear wasteful.

The author is correct in stating that Welsh-medium schools are now attracting pupils from all backgrounds, but no attempt is made to introduce consideration for these pupils.

Disadvantaged pupils could be finding more success in Welsh medium but eroding the statistics shown.

Results in English state schools are not quoted. Finally no attempt is made to outline the successes of pupils.

Comparisons should consider the number of pupils attaining five GCSEs and the average scores per pupil, weighted to reflect pupil background.
