The Chamber strongly encourages the Michigan Legislature and Gov. Jennifer Granholm to adopt high school requirements that require proficiency in math, science and other subjects while allowing schools maximum flexibility in how they teach the material.
"In order to succeed economically, students are going to need some kind of post-secondary education, whether it's a college degree or a skill certificate. Right now the majority of high school students are not graduating with the academic skills needed to successfully complete a post secondary education," said Greg Handel, the Chamber's senior director for Workforce Development.
"While we have to ensure that these students meet rigorous standards we also need to make sure that new legislation allows and encourages schools to be innovative in how they help students do so," he added.
Specifically, the Chamber supports requirements adopted by the State Board of Education at their December 2005 meeting. Included are four years of English language arts; one year each of Algebra I, geometry, Algebra II and one additional math class in the senior year; one year each of biology, physics or chemistry and one additional year of science; three years of social science, which must include a semester of civics and a semester of economics; one year of health or physical education; one year of fine arts, which may include music, art or theater courses; and two years of world languages.
With more than 22,000 members, the Detroit Regional Chamber is the largest chamber of commerce in the country. The Chamber's mission is carried out through business attraction efforts, public policy advocacy, strategic partnerships and quality products and services for members.
