Ed Committee Passes Bill to Let Other Students Play Sports at Public Schools

Posted on: Wednesday, 25 January 2006, 15:01 CST

A bill to allow home and private school students to play sports in their neighborhood public schools passed the Senate Education Standing Committee by one vote Tuesday.

SB72 sponsoring Sen. Mark Madsen, R-Lehi, called the bill an "attempt to standardize things and codify the good experiences the majority of people are enjoying when home school interacts with extracurricular activities."

Several home school parents and students testified schools differ in allowing teens to participate in sports and other activities such as graduation parties, unnecessarily robbing some of experiences or requiring them to jump through hoops.

But education bosses ranging from state associate superintendent Ray Timothy to Utah High School Activities Association executive director Evan Excell fear the bill sets up different eligibility guidelines for home school students, which they fear could invite abuses for home-school and public school students wishing to work the system.

Madsen said he's trying to balance bill language with the philosophy behind home schooling, which is to be free of state requirements.
