Event To Focus on Special Education

Posted on: Friday, 27 January 2006, 15:00 CST

By ELAINE D. BRISEO Journal Staff Writer

The Bernalillo school district is holding a conference today to make sure all its staffers -- from bus drivers to classroom teachers -- provide the best environment possible for special education students.

Bernalillo Public Schools uses the inclusion approach, which means that special education students are taught alongside regular students. Bernice Life, BPS director of special education, said some students with severe disabilities are pulled out of class for services, but are left in the regular education class as much as possible.

Life was recently named director, and said she wanted to provide a "how-to" conference for staff as opposed to a conference that just provides information or discusses educational theory.

"There will be presentations from our own staff on things they have done that have worked," she said.

The staff must enroll for three one-hour sessions, each on a different topic. The conference will have a total of 31 topics from which to choose. They include team teaching, ways to incorporate technology into the classroom, the role of the school nurse, how parents can help and how to extend instruction beyond the classroom.

Guest speakers will be Regis Pecos from the office of Rep. Ben Lujan, D-Santa Fe, and James Alarid, from the education department at New Mexico Highlands University.

Life said Pecos, a native of Cochiti Pueblo -- which is in the BPS district -- attended Princeton. He will talk to staff about teaching methods that inspired him.

Alarid will discuss the importance of inclusion programs and how they prepare special education students for the real world.
