Educators Question Taft Plan

By M.R. Kropko

CANTON -- Some educators questioned Gov. Bob Taft's proposal for tougher school curriculum, saying Thursday that while they lauded its intentions, they worried about the cost and problems finding enough qualified teachers to carry it out.

The "Ohio Core" plan would require high school students to take four years of math and English, three years of science and social studies and two years of a foreign language beginning in the fall of 2007.

"It's a typical state mandate," Bucyrus High School Principal James Oyster said.

"Where in the heck is the money? I'm going to have to add teachers."

Taft did not estimate the cost of the plan, which would start with students now in seventh grade.

The Republican governor, getting closer to wrapping up his eight years in office, said after a discussion about the proposal at Timken High School in Canton that the state was committed to increasing education funding.

"The state is increasing funding for schools and will continue to do so," he said.

"The main challenge with this plan will be to upgrade the skills of our teachers, especially to help our math teachers upgrade and improve their skills."

He did not specify how he planned to accomplish that.
