The Future of America's Classroom: A Town Hall Meeting on Jan. 31 in San Diego
Posted on: Monday, 30 January 2006, 15:00 CST
News Advisory:
A Town Hall Meeting will be held Tuesday, Jan. 31, at 2 p.m. at the Manchester Grand Hyatt in San Diego, Calif., hosted by the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE).
2006 is a monumental year for the future of American education. It marks not only the deadline for teacher qualifications under No Child Left Behind, but also is revealing a growing gap in access to education, an ever increasing diversity in the classroom, and a mounting realization that international competition in education will mean greater international competition for the future American workforce.
Southern California is a microcosm for these dynamic realities, which is why AACTE found it a timely local backdrop for a Town Hall Meeting with national importance. Bringing together leaders from the business community, educators, students, and parents, the Town Hall will ask and respond to the serious questions facing the future of our education system.
Moderated by the new President and CEO of AACTE, Sharon P. Robinson, the Town Hall panel, representing the spectrum of stakeholders in the prospect of the K-12 classroom, will include:
-- Lowell Billings, Chula Vista superintendent
-- Andrew Fernandez, High Tech High School
-- Warlene Gary, CEO, National PTA
-- John Hofmeister, president of Shell Oil Company
-- Chauncey Veatch, 2002 Teacher of the Year
