Feb. 2--Candice Sturdivant of Wingate wants to start her own business and believes she needs a bachelor's degree.
But with two children and a full-time job in Matthews, Sturdivant says she wasn't sure how she ever could get a four-year degree.
Wingate University and Central Piedmont Community College may have solved the problem for her.
The two schools have launched a joint program in which CPCC students can transfer easily to Wingate and continue taking classes at CPCC's Levine Campus in Matthews.
Wingate will offer classes in six majors -- business, communications, elementary education, parks and recreation, psychology and sports management -- at the CPCC site in Matthews.
"This is really convenient," says Sturdivant, a 1999 Forest Hills High School graduate who attended CPCC for two years and works at Family Dollar's offices in Matthews.
"Now I can come right from Family Dollar to classes here, and then go home," she says. "This should help me get my degree and eventually start a business."
"We talked with Central Piedmont about the needs of their students," says Martha Asti, vice president of academic affairs at Wingate. "We made our decisions based on what the students need."
The program actually began this semester with a handful of classes.
"I have 24 students in one of my classes," said Wingate's Keith Cannon, who teaches a public relations course in the evenings this semester in Matthews.
In addition, Wingate is offering CPCC students a reduced rate on their first two courses.
All of Wingate's classes at the CPCC campus are third- and fourth-year courses. CPCC will offer the freshman and sophomore level courses.
