Feb. 2--Arizona State University students are ready to fight their administration's efforts to raise tuition 8.5 percent for resident undergraduates at the Tempe campus next year.
Corrine Widmer, new president of ASU's undergraduate student government, said student leaders have sent the Arizona Board of Regents a recommendation to raise tuition just 4.5 percent -- something closer to the rate of inflation.
Tuition is getting out of hand, she said.
"The majority of our students feel that way," Widmer said.
Under ASU President Michael Crow's proposed hike, in-state undergraduate students at Tempe would pay $4,677 -- nearly $366 more than this year. But if the ASU student government gets its way, those students would pay just $194 more in tuition.
Since Crow took the helm in 2002, ASU tuition and fees have increased 70 percent. Enrollment has jumped 10 percent to more than 61,000 this year.
The regents will hold a hearing on tuition at their March 9-10 meeting in Tucson.
