Iowa University Estimates $4 Million Will Repair Fire-Damaged Building

By Emily Christensen, Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier, Iowa

Feb. 2--CEDAR FALLS -- The numbers are still preliminary but University of Northern Iowa administrators told the Board of Regents Wednesday it will cost at least $4 million to renovate fire-damaged Gilchrist Hall.

Tom Schellhardt, vice president of administration and finance, said the architects and engineers are still working with Travelers' Insurance to determine the final settlement. The university carried a $2 million deductible with the company and is currently seeking the money to cover their cost from the state. The $2 million has been included in the governor's budget but the bill has not yet been approved.

After learning the office relocations would last for at least another year, Schellhardt said the university began seeking more permanent, consolidated office space for displaced employees. The new spaces should be just as accommodating to current students, faculty and staff and also provide a more visible and easily accessible office space for prospective students and visitors.

Student Regent Jenny Rokes said the students have been pleased with the university's commitment to communicating those moves to the students.

"If it wasn't for the type of community we have at UNI you would be hearing a lot more complaints," Schellhardt said. "Everyone has been very tolerant and we appreciate that."

Gilchrist and two other UNI buildings were damaged by fires intentionally set over Homecoming weekend in October.

UNI Public Safety continues to investigate the matter. No arrests have been made.
