More Than 20 New Regional Schools and Districts Activate Apangea Learning's Smart Help This School Year

Posted on: Monday, 6 February 2006, 09:00 CST

Apangea Learning, an educational support company that enables students to dramatically improve achievement, today announced that its 2005-2006 sales season has already resulted in the signing on of 20 new regional sites during the September through December timeframe. This represents the addition of 9,900 new students who will benefit from Apangea Learning's SmartHelp tutoring solution, bringing the total number of students served by SmartHelp up to 17,000. SmartHelp is the only proven tutoring solution that combines artificial intelligence integrated with live human tutoring to allow districts to efficiently and effectively tutor all students grades 5-12 at a price of $1-2 per tutoring hour.

"These new school sites are exciting to us because they indicate continued, rapid growth for Apangea Learning, and more importantly, we know that thousands of additional students will now benefit from a new way of learning," Lou Piconi, Apangea CEO, said. "SmartHelp lets teachers ensure the right learning pathway has been created for each student, and teaches students how to break problems into manageable, sequential steps to effectively gain the right math skills."

Gains in math scores of 30 percent have been realized by students using SmartHelp. Sixty percent of students (sample: basic/below basic student) improved an average of 14 percent measured against the PSSA (Pennsylvania System of School Assessment) replication exam - with only 32 hours of tutoring.

In Pennsylvania, 14 new sites have signed on for SmartHelp solution since September 2005. "We're pleased with how easy SmartHelp has been to implement in our district," said Jay Badams, Director of High Schools, Erie City School District. "This is the most effective, most affordable way we've found to reach every student to improve achievement with a personalized tutoring approach."

In Ohio, new clients include Edgewood City and Ohio State University, representing a broadening use of the Smart Help solution. In West Virginia, four districts will benefit from the SmartHelp solution:

-- Tyler County Schools,

-- Preston County Schools,

-- Monongalia County Schools

-- and Berkeley County Schools.

Schools allow use of SmartHelp during classtime, afterschool and even at home through an Internet connection. Teachers can edit the learning pathway set by SmartHelp's initial diagnosis of the student, and can track progress through the program's robust reporting capabilities.

"I have been very impressed with the progress made by schools in Pennsylvania that use the Apangea solution, and so I look forward to the same results in West Virginia," said Larry Lamb, Mathematics Coordinator, Office of Instructional Services, West Virginia Dept. of Education.
