Three Onslow Schools Named 'Super Safe'

Feb. 6--Three Onslow County Schools are "Super Safe."

An awards ceremony was held in Greensboro Thursday to honor Northwoods Park Middle School, Hunter's Creek Middle School and Richlands Primary School. The three Onslow County schools were among 43 statewide honored as Super Safe Schools this year.

Hunters Creek Middle School Principal Meghan Doyle was excited about the news for her school.

"We feel very fortunate to have received this designation," she said. "Hunters Creek Middle School would not be the safe school that it is without the constant support of our staff, as well as the support of our students and their families."

She gave most of the credit for the time-intensive task of documenting safe school requirements for NCDPI to Annie Weaver, assistant principal.

"She did all of the work to document our success for the Department of Public Instruction and we greatly appreciate her efforts to win our school's recognition," Doyle said.

Principals at the two other schools were just as pleased.

"…It validates the strategies we have in place for improving safety," said Cindy Cribbs, principal at Richlands Primary School. "For us it served as an opportunity to be reflective practitioners and analyze our data to confirm what we already knew we are doing."

Administrators are constantly evaluating their data, she said.

"This is an ongoing process that is aligned with our school's strategic plan," Cribbs said. "Being a primary school means our key focus is implementing strategies to create a safe and caring school."

Richlands Primary School staff continue to model good citizenship as well as positive character traits, she said.

"We can build a foundation for success that will last a lifetime," Cribbs said.

Last year, Onslow County only had one school, New Bridge Middle, that earned the Super Safe School title by the North Carolina Department of Public Education.

Representatives of the county's schools received their awards during a luncheon ceremony at the 2006 Safe Schools and Character Education Conference being in Greensboro on Thursday.

The Department of Public Instruction's School Safety and Climate Division established the Triple "S" School Award to recognize public schools' exemplary efforts to ensure the safety of students and staff.

"School safety is the number one concern of parents and the number one priority of schools," State Superintendent June Atkinson said. "A safe learning environment and high student achievement go hand-in-hand. I congratulate these schools for working diligently to ensure the safety of their school community."

To receive recognition as a Super Safe School, schools voluntarily submit a portfolio of information documenting the safety processes they have in place. The portfolios are evaluated and the scores received determine which schools are recognized.

Each school honored received a plaque designating it as a Triple "S" School for 2005-06.
