SUFFOLK School officials Thursday aired a plan to redraw student attendance lines for four elementary schools in the fast-growing northeast part of the city.
Under the proposal, about 825 children would go to a different school next school year than they did this year.
Most of those students an estimated 714 would attend the new $20 million Creekside Elementary School, the citys 13th elementary school, which will open for next school year.
The others would go to either Florence Bowser/Driver, Nansemond Parkway or Northern Shores elementary schools.
The plan calls for 2,428 students to be split among the four schools.
A community meeting will be held 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 15 at Nansemond River High School to talk about the proposed changes.
When you have a community that is growing, you just cant count on attending the same school for six years, Superintendent Milton Liverman said at a media briefing on the plan Thursday.
Liverman said the proposed plan avoids splitting neighborhoods, puts more children closer to their schools than current boundaries, and creates shorter bus routes. However, some children will not go to the school closest to where they live, he said.
Maps showing the new boundaries will be posted by the end of today on the Suffolk Public Schools Web site: www.sps.k12.va.us, officials said. A neighborhood and street name index will also be on the Web site to show what schools students will attend.
Administrators are soliciting comments on the changes. Those can be emailed to: rezoning@spsk12.net or mailed to: Suffolk Public Schools, Attn: Rezoning, 1507 Freeney Ave. Suffolk, VA 23434. Comments must be received by March 1.
