Feb. 12--OWASSO -- Students who need some help catching up can earn credits through Owasso Public Schools' new night school program. About 95 students began their first night school classes two weeks ago, said David Hall, assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction. "We were very encouraged by the numbers that chose to attend," Hall said. "We've had a need for a considerable amount of time." The credit recovery program for secondary students offers Algebra I and English I, II, III and IV, he said. Students pay $100 per session to attend the Monday night classes from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Hall said the district decided to charge for the program because "we had no funding from the state per se, and we had staff members willing to spend the extra time." Sam Herriman, Owasso Mid-High principal, said the program would serve students with various needs. "Kids might fail a class because they didn't understand the material, they might have attendance issues, or maybe came from a different state where their curriculum wasn't aligned with ours," Herriman said. Hall said some students who wanted to take makeup classes were often traveling to Tulsa or other nearby programs to take night classes. "Our principals just wanted to assist students and allow them to be closer to home," he said. Herriman said that the program didn't have a downside. "I love that that we can give the kids a chance to get caught up and get the credits they need," he said. "Mid-High kids need 10 credits to go across the street to the high school. It'll give them a chance to stay with their peer group." ------------ Kim Brown 581-8474 kim.brown@tulsaworld.com
