Girls' School on a Hi-Tech High ; BARTLEY GREEN: Pupils Reap Benefits From Specialist Status

A SPECIALIST girls' school has been praised by national inspectors for successfully meeting the challenging targets it sets its pupils.

Hillcrest School and Sixth Form Centre, in Stonehouse Lane, Bartley Green, headed by Lynda Roan, is reaping the benefits of becoming a maths and computing college.

Education watchdogs Ofsted said specialist school status had contributed to "good improvements" since its last inspection, such as in use of information communication technology.

Developments in maths have already improved standards across the school, while provision for the key skills of literacy, numeracy and ICT is good.

Specialist status had also greatly increased the work with the local community, particularly in increasing the number of computers available for community use.

Ofsted said some have been given to residents, which, in turn, has helped some students with their homework.

Inspectors who visited the 821-pupil school in January said Hillcrest serves a socially and economically disadvantaged area, with pupil attainment on entry below the national average.

But they said pupils generally make good progress and are "well prepared" for their economic future.

The quality of teaching is described as good, with teachers said to be very skilled in supporting and guiding students towards achieving challenging targets.

Ofsted said in its report that the great majority of students, whatever their backgrounds or prior attainment, achieve well, reach their targets and enjoy their learning.

The sixth form was found to be satisfactory, with A-level results average overall, but better in 2005 than in previous years. GCSE results last year were also broadly average, though below average in science.

"The school rightly says there is room for further improvement, for example, in science," inspectors added.
