Calm After the Storms Expected at Meeting: Contract for Schools, Wastewater Service Are Topics on Monday Agenda

Feb. 19--After several long meetings -- and a few that were fairly contentious -- County Manager Mike Shalati says the Union Board of County Commissioners has "a very light agenda" for Monday.
Instead of hot debate about the makeup of the county's planning board, what is on a secret audio recording one commissioner made or whether people can stack junk on their property, commissioners will:
-- Discuss an architectural contract to add classrooms to six or seven elementary schools. Antioch, Porter Ridge, Sandy Ridge, Kensington and Marvin elementary schools are among the schools that would each get about 10 extra classrooms, Shalati said.
Although plenty of Union's packed schools could use the extra space, the additions aren't strictly growth-related. In 2004, Gov. Mike Easley ordered reduced class sizes for students in grade three and lower.
-- Talk about letting some 100 homeowners in the Fairfield Plantation neighborhood hook into the county's wastewater treatment operation.
Currently, members of the subdivision near Stallings are served by a private company that discharges the wastewater into Goose Creek, an area the county is trying to protect, Shalati said. The move, which wouldn't happen until 2008, when the Twelve-mile Creek wastewater treatment plant expansion is complete, isn't expected to cost the county any money.
"This is more a service to the community and making a contribution back to the environment," Shalati manager said.
When asked about the light agenda, commissioners Chairman Roger Lane said: "We just didn't have that much going on here. I don't think there's anything the least bit contentious -- these are just things we have to get done."
But then again, you never know, Lane said.
