Special Education Law, Advocacy Training
The nonprofit Lancaster County Center for Autism Resources & Education Inc. will sponsor a Boot Camp designed to help families of children who receive special education services, as well as educators, administrators, health care providers, therapists, advocates and attorneys. The Wrightslaw Special Education Law & Advocacy Boot Camp will be held Friday and Saturday, April 7 and 8, at Lancaster Bible College, 901 Eden Road. Peter and Pamela Darr Wright, founders of Wrightslaw.com, a Web site about education law, special education law and special education advocacy, will conduct the program. Subject areas to be covered in the training include how to use special education statutes and regulations to get answers to questions; how to measure educational progress and chart test scores; how to write individualized education plan (IEP) goals and objectives; the importance of paper trails, effective letter- writing and advocacy strategies. Attorney Peter Wright has practiced special education law since the 1970s; psychotherapist Pamela Darr Wright is trained in clinical psychology and social work. They wrote Wrightslaw: Special Education Law; Wrightslaw: From Emotions to Advocacy; Wrightslaw: No Child Left Behind, and Wrightslaw: IDEA (Individuals with Disability Education Act) 2004. Fees range from $85 for a professional for the Friday session only, to $110 for two parents to attend the two-day program, if registered prior to March 1; additional fees for those who register after that date.
