Board Gets Final Draft of School Boundaries

Feb. 23--There was no public comment Wednesday night as the governing board of the Clovis Unified School District received a final staff recommendation on high school boundary changes, but that didn't mean that community concerns were not a factor.
Walt Byrd, assistant superintendent for facilities services, told board members that the district held public meetings before and after releasing their proposed boundary changes.
Byrd said concerns raised during those meetings helped shape what will be the district's fourth major boundary change since 1960.
"We attempted to balance the size of the secondary schools while also providing for future growth through at least 2015," Byrd said.
The proposed boundaries primarily impact students attending seven elementary schools -- Tarpey, Mountain View, Dry Creek, Gettysburg, Fugman, Riverview and Copper Hills. The biggest changes officials noted were that students from Tarpey will attend Buchanan High School instead of Clovis East High School, and students from Gettysburg Elementary will attend Clovis High School instead of Clovis East.
Four elementary schools, Woods, Harlan Ranch, Maple Creek and Fugman, will be split, with students feeding into two middle and high schools. Clovis Unified Superintendent Terry Bradley said that at least in the case of Woods, the split was on paper only, because the affected area is not developed.
Bradley credited the district's Student Housing Committee and information staff for answering the public questions and concerns on the boundary changes, and said the plan was more complete than any previous boundary shift.
"It's an honor when we hear that people don't want to leave the school they are attending," Bradley said. "But this time we had more information about growth and future development throughout the district than we had during any other boundary change. I think the committee did an outstanding job."
